As I love couch gaming, many of my games have a local multiplayer option.
For long time it was split screen gaming (for many of my XBLIG games).
But for my new engine, I'm doing it another way.
All player are on a single screen and a small part is reserved for each player interface.
It works pretty well for basic games like "little bastard" with only 3 interactions. (each button mouse is an interaction) and no resources.
But for bigger game like "little Kingdom 2" with several resources and lot of interactions, it's a problem, I can hardly put 23 buttons in my tiny interface...
Even if it was possible, it's hard for the player with a pad to go in the corner for each interactions.
So I'm using this circular contexual menu.
Each time you want to interact, a circular menu is displayed near the cursor with the possible interactions and some expanation. It disapear when you've finished.
It doesn't take a lot of place, and you don't have to move the cursor a lot.
So the game is playable even if 4 player games. And the interaction speed is nearly the same for the mouse player than for the pad player.
In LK2, I'm using 3 distinct circular menu and it work pretty well!
It's so usefull, that I may be able to make bigger game using this system (One day, I will make a 4X).
A new step has been done for LK2!
Firstly, it has new graphics, not a lot of thing have changed, but it completely change the feeling of the game. Thanks matt!
It's mostly polishing :
- Most of the UI has been reworked (again)
- The trading system has been improved (you can choose to trade 250 instead of all)
- The diplomatie in multiplayer now work.
- It's harder to destroy a building by mistake.
Next week I should update it on Steam and itch.io
By the way, the greenlight isn't advancing anymore, I'll try several things to boost it!
2 new games are on the way!
I've put them on itch.io for free!
Little Bastard is a diplomatic game.
Your kingdom generate troops and automaticly attack the neighbor.
Your job is to select the diplomatic stance (exploration / defensif / agressif) of your kingdom.
As each stance is at war with the two others, you better change at the right moment or you'll be obliterate.
Dark Seal, the new version of my old game ^^.
You and the other 5 dark lord are allied to survive against the light forces.
Protect the seal with your troop and your spells!
Remember that even if you are allied, only one lord will be the new overlord.
So maybe magical mistakes will be needed.
Both of them are made with my new engine, so it's real time and up to 4 player on the same screen!
By the way, the engine source code will be open source, tell me if you are interrested!
I've got severals feedback from the greenlight page.
So a new verson is on the way, here's the main changes :
It's official, Little Kingdom 2 is finished!
It takes me 6 month to pass from LK to LK2.
Adding 3D to the engine, reworking HUD from zero, improving the map generator...
It was a lot of works.
The good point is that I've used this occasion to make a big "Empty game".
It means that for my next game, I can restart with a lot of LK2 elements (keep the graphism, the generator, the score screen...)
The game is now on itch.io and on Steam Greenlight (please vote for it!)
Last summer, I've talked with a friend about our trouble to get unit for our games.
And so we made a soft to resolve this ^^.
Unit maker is a small program to easily make units.
- Select the elements you want to add
- Choose their color
- Export the resulting ".png".
The 4 direction and the 4 step of the unit are displayed as well as the resulting animations.
A lot of elements can be changed (mouth, nose, shoes...)
And everything can be rank and / or colored.
It's a pretty fun tool.
I particullary like the random button. (generate a full random unit)
Fun things, I was tired of programming and he was tired of drawing, so we exchange our jobs.
And here's the result!
If you want to test it (or buy it), it's on itch.io
